On May 23, 2024, the Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia, officially opened the International Scientific Conference “Translational and Clinical Medicine – Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education and Research.” The conference brought together members of the International Advisory Board of the TSU Faculty of Medicine from 12 countries worldwide.
Over the course of two days, distinguished international and Georgian medical professionals discussed contemporary achievements and global trends in translational biomedicine, digitalization, and artificial intelligence at TSU. Participants presented the latest developments in medical imaging and computer-assisted diagnostics, the role of digitalization and artificial intelligence in surgery and transplantation, as well as innovations in medical education and research enabled by digital technologies and AI.
According to TSU Rector Jaba Samushia, the mission of the TSU Faculty of Medicine – as a central hub of medical education in Georgia – is to educate medical professionals and researchers and to actively contribute to the development of international healthcare and medical-scientific filed. “The advancement of biomedical research requires the continuous updating of knowledge, and one of the most important mechanisms for addressing this challenge is increasing the level of internationalization, particularly the internationalization of scientific research,” stated Jaba Samushia.
As part of the event, Professor Ingo Runnebaum of the University of Jena was awarded with the title of the Honorary Doctor of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Professor Runnebaum has been a member of the International Advisory Board of the TSU Faculty of Medicine since 2022. Through his initiative, internships have been organized for TSU medical students and research staff at the Departments of Gynecology and Pathology of the Jena University Hospital. One of his primary professional goals is the introduction of modern and innovative services at the Jena Women’s Hospital, the establishment of the highest standards of care, and the development of optimal individualized solutions that improve patients’ quality of life.

“I am pleased that Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University is hosting an international conference with nearly 20 speakers from 12 countries. Most of them are members of the International Advisory Board established at the TSU Faculty of Medicine, whose activities contribute significantly to the development and internationalization of medical education in Georgia,” noted Dimitri Kordzaia, Director of the Alexander Natishvili Institute of Morphology at TSU.
Members of the International Advisory Board of the TSU Faculty of Medicine are actively involved in the implementation of modern educational standards aligned with the recommendations of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). They also contribute to the implementation of international research projects involving students and academic staff, support student exchange programs and training opportunities, promote the professional development of academic personnel in leading university clinics abroad, participate in the development of joint doctoral programs (including those based on the cotutelle principle), and deliver lectures and educational courses at the TSU Faculty of Medicine.
The opening ceremony of the conference was attended by the Dean of the TSU Faculty of Medicine, Maia Bitskinashvili, representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia, Georgian and international specialists in the field, professors, and students.
