Prof. George Sharvashidze is a Georgian diplomat, higher education policy expert, and academic leader with extensive experience in university governance, education reform, and international cooperation. Since 2023, he has served as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Georgia to the Republic of Armenia.
From 2016 to 2022, George Sharvashidze was the Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, one of the leading universities in the region. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at Tbilisi State University. Earlier in his career, he held senior positions within the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, including Deputy Minister and First Deputy Minister, and served as Director of the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement.
His professional activities extend to numerous international organizations such as UNESCO, the Council of Europe, the European Union, and the Open Society Institute. He is an oridinary member of the Academia Europaea from 2017 and has served on executive and advisory boards of several international university associations and networks.
George Sharvashidze’s academic publications focus on quality assurance, private higher education ,governance, and data-driven decision-making in higher education. In recognition of his contributions to education and public service, he was decorated with the Order of Excellence in 2022.
