On 20 and 21 August this year, the annual conference and General Assembly of the international organization Euroclassica were held in Tbilisi. The event was co-organized by the TSU Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the Faculty of Humanities, the Georgian National Museum, and the Academia Europaea Tbilisi Hub.
Researchers from 24 countries, together with Georgian scholars, gathered at Tbilisi State University to discuss the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to teaching classical languages and culture, as well as the challenges posed by global developments and policies. The conference also included presentations on combining traditional and innovative teaching methods, epigraphy, ancient poetry and metre, and the effective and responsible use of artificial intelligence.
A delegation from Accademia Vivarium Novum, a long-standing partner of Tbilisi State University, also held a workshop on the so-called natural method of teaching classical languages, among other activities.
Euroclassica is a European organization founded in 1991. It supports the teaching of classical languages, literature, and culture at school and university levels and promotes classical philology and the study of antiquity more broadly.
Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University has been a member of Euroclassica since 2023. Membership helps increase the visibility of the Institute of Classical Philology, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies and of the University as a whole. It also supports the exchange of European experience and the development of international cooperation, both at TSU and across Georgia.
This cooperation aims to further develop the teaching of classical languages and culture at both university and school levels, and to bring teaching content and methods closer to European standards.
